Do you believe man is contributing to climate change? If you think “No”, have you realized you are in a very small group?

The vast majority of world’s people believe climate change is happening and man is a contributor to it.

The Fourth National Climate Assessment, which is the work of 13 US federal agencies and more than 350 scientists conclude the earth is warming faster than at any time in human history, and we’re the ones causing it. Climate change is already affecting people, and the more carbon we produce, the more dangerous the impacts over the coming years.

So how small is this denying minority? The current world population is roughly 7.7 billion. The current US population is in the 300.3 million range. So, follow the math 43% of US people are deniers or 141,470,000. Divide this by 7.7 Billion world population gets us to 1.8%. Is that a small? Well ok there are some data and math issues here, but just on the face of it you get the point.

What evidence do deniers use to support their position? Is the evidence solid or is it what Anchorage Daily News cites as myths, such as: “1) Climate scientists are just in it for the money.” (Question: Where is their benefit?) “2) The climate has changed before. It’s just a natural cycle.” (Answer: Never this fast.) “3) Climate scientists are split on whether it’s real.” (Yes 97% to No 3%) “4) Climate change won’t affect me.” (It is affecting you now.) “5) It’s cold outside - global warming can’t be real.” (You are talking weather not “climate”.)

Answer this question, why not believe in the conclusions of so many people and science professionals? Cognitive Dissonance? The evidence that climate change is happening and man can make changes to mitigate the impact is so overwhelming all people should insist that US leadership do so. Only our lives, the lives of our progeny and the world depend on it.
